Fiber, Fabric, and Fighting XXIV

FFF will return to the Seven Mountains Scout Camp the weekend of November 20-22, 2026. Please see the event announcement for details on the site, dayboard, bunk space, and general registration.

The Fiber Arts Salon area will return, with equipment including a warping board, umbrella swift, and skein winder, and plenty of string and small equipment. When Phiala isn’t teaching in that space, come use the equipment, ask questions, or spend time working on projects in company. Try fingerloop braiding. Learn a flat braid. Sit and chat. Get help with tablet weaving.

Clothing and Accessories

Hispano-Flemish Men’s Clothing
Magistra Beatriz Aluares de la Oya
This class is an in depth study of men’s clothing in Spain from 1480 to 1530.
90 minutes.
No limit.
No fee. Some handouts will be available in print.

Viking Age Jorvik-style Cap

Finds from Viking Age York and Dublin include small caps made from rectangular pieces of fabric. While we aren’t sure how they were worn, or by whom, we do know that they make a great accessory for the Viking Age SCAdian. This class discusses the different styles that have been found how to make one for yourself.
50 minutes.

$2 for a linen piece, otherwise bring your own rectangle at least 10x24 in. Please bring needle, thread, snips to sew your cap with. Some tape measures will be available for use.

Button Basics with Bess

This class will briefly overview thread-wrapped buttons of the 16th century, with a focus on learning the “Tudor” or spiderweb style button. Examples on variations will be available.

Weaving a Piece with Four Selvedge Edges

We will warp and weave a small piece with no cut edges. Really. All four edges of the pieces are whole edges that will not fray. This is a hands on class. I will provide simple looms and string. I will have large blunt needles to lend. Please feel free to bring your own as well.
This could easily go longer than 50 mins but I can also just have folks follow up with me later in the day if they like.

Beginning Nålbinding

It’s not knitting, it’s better! In this 2-hour course, you will learn the basic Oslo stitch, two ways to join new yarns, how to start the chain, and if time permits, Mammen stitch and how to join your work into a tube. You will begin with a chain started for you so you can learn the muscle memory for repeated stitches. Both left-and right-handed techniques will be taught. You don’t need to have any experience. All supplies will be provided by the instructor, but you are welcome to bring your favorite tools if they are more comfortable. Several books, samples of different stitches and completed projects will be available to look at. The toolkit and a resource packet are yours to take home.

Support Spinning

Hands on instruction on support spinning, which is used to spin fine and delicate fibers such as cotton, cashmere and exotic fibers

$10, covers spindle, bowl fibers and handout. Students are encouraged to bring their own spindles and fibers

Beginning Drop Spinning

Make Your Own Yarn! This course will teach the basics of learning to use a drop spindle to make a single strand of yarn. Samples of different sheep breed wools will be available to look at, as well as books on different yarns you can make by hand. All materials are supplied by the instructor, including a spindle for you to take home and enough wool fiber for serious practice. A small amount of acrylic or bamboo will be available for those allergic to wool. A resource handout will provide some basic and advanced techniques and supply sources.
