Cop-out

Instead of actual content, let alone Netherlands photos, today you get odds and ends from the Internet that I’ve been collecting.

First, most important, and showiest: the Staffordshire Hoard, a glorious collection of Anglo-Saxon goldwork. “Better than Sutton Hoo.” Found by a guy with a metal detector – wouldn’t that make your day?

Beer from 45-million-year-old yeast? And it tastes good, apparently.

Paper art. Wow.

Cloth woven from the silk of more than a million spiders. It’s gorgeous, but I have trouble picturing how one would attach the poor spiders to a “silk extraction machine”, as the creators and their spider-wranglers did.

Welcome!

I’ve been doing stuff with string for quite some time, and describing it to others online since 1996 or so at Phiala’s String Page.

I also do some science and write some fiction.

I’m Phiala most places on the internet.
