“Start as you mean to go on” seems to be the general consensus on the new year. If that’s the way it works, though, my 2009 is going to be late and disorganized. Four days into the year and I’m already desperately behind and overcommitted, just as I ended 2008. Not undoable, just requires a level of organization and discipline I haven’t quite worked up to.
I do have resolutions this year, mostly involving that organization and discipline. I have more concrete goals as well, but they are things I don’t want to discuss in public just yet, either because they involve the participation of others who might not appreciate that, or because they involve a high probability of me falling flat on my face, and I don’t want to do that in public either. (Though I’ll probably tell you about it after the fact, in both cases.)
Here are a couple of bits I saved from other people’s blogs that express interesting information or eloquent wishes for the new year. I did save them on New Year’s Day, see above about late and disorganized.
From Leigh: 2009 is the International Year of Natural Fibres. The video has some nice visuals, including very old textiles, but is rather “rah rah”, as you’d expect. Year of natural fibers… this could be fun. Let’s see if we can come up with some good ideas in the online textile community.
Neil Gaiman said something very important:
I hope you will have a wonderful year, that you’ll dream dangerously and outrageously, that you’ll make something that didn’t exist before you made it, that you will be loved and that you will be liked, and that you will have people to love and to like in return. And, most importantly (because I think there should be more kindness and more wisdom in the world right now), that you will, when you need to be, be wise, and that you will always be kind.
I got some good things done yesterday – weaving even – and got up very early this morning to bat out a couple more of the most overdue projects. I was treated to this lovely apocalyptic sunrise, and am now enjoying the dulcet tones of a snoring dog draped across the couch.
(Apparently FTP has gone bye-bye again. ARGH!)

It’s wonderful to see that my start to the new year is in line with the rest of the universe. Surprising, to see the exact same quote, but refreshing.
That is an awesome photo!
I, too, tried to spend my New Year’s Day in a way that would get my year off to a good start. May all of us with such intentions have the good fortune to achieve them! Or at least make significant progress and not berate ourselves when things do not work out quite like we’d like them to!
