Hi, my name is Phiala (Sarah), and I have a problem, or actually several:

  • I have a penchant for finding extremely neat things and not taking proper notes. A conversation with me has frequent, “Well, I read somewhere…” and “I saw this neat website…” but no followthrough.
  • I tend to get carried away with projects. I’d rather plan a book than write a few paragraphs, and thus nothing ever happens. You know, writing a few paragraphs does NOT mean that I can’t ever write the book, and actually would help in assembling a draft if I get to that point.
  • I have lots of great plans for articles for my web pages Stringpage and Astronomicum (and also FunctionalDiversity.org but that’s rather different) that I never get to. Again, grand plans but no execution. Stringpage is 11, and doesn’t have nearly as much neat stuff as I’d like.

And thus, a blog. I can write and illustrate shorter articles and notes and commentary on string, books, research projects that catch my interest, hopefully without getting caught in the “bigger and better” trap. Quick and informal, with the understanding that things may be formalized later.

Some possible contents: tablet weaving tips; illustrated guide to that horrible fingerloop braiding thing I teach; a quick review of the latest book or website that was too exciting to lose. (And maybe this way I won’t.) I think it’s mandatory to include an occasional photo of my cat, too, based on other blogs I like. I also plan to include slightly improved (and possibly illustrated) versions of some of the more informative newsgroup posts I’ve made over the years.

If all goes well, I’ll add something similar to my other websites, but for this trial run I’ll stick to one location.

What do you think?

One response to “Why this, why now?”

I think it is ok. except I am still waiting on the cat photo.

Welcome!

I’ve been doing stuff with string for quite some time, and describing it to others online since 1996 or so at Phiala’s String Page.

I also do some science and write some fiction.

I’m Phiala most places on the internet.
