Neil Gaiman* has a Magnificent Oracular Journal. His ordinary journal is anything but ordinary**, as one might expect, so I anticipated great things from the Magnificent Oracle.

I shook the Mystical Ball of Truth as instructed. I shook it extra-hard, just to make sure, while concentrating on a Very Important Question. (No, I shan’t tell you what it was. That would spoil everything.) Still concentrating, I released the Mystical Ball of Truth, anticipating a great revelation. And the MBT said:

?

I kid you not. The dialog box contained only a question mark. Apparently my VIQ is unknowable, even by Neil Gaiman’s Magnificent Oracular Journal. Wow.

I shook again, and the MBT told me:

“And I need to close many tabs and windows, so…”

Perhaps my concentration on the VIQ slipped a bit.

* You don’t know who Neil Gaiman is? Go read some short stories!

** My expectation of unordinariness is probably colored by many years of Gaiman-worship, and it’s only gotten worse since I started reading his blog. Neil (not that he and I are actually on a first-name basis) even answers reader questions, and seems like a normal human being, despite the monochrome black, the interesting hair, and the things that crawl out of his braid brain onto paper. Well okay, not really normal, but he seems like someone you’d actually want to talk to, though perhaps not after midnight.

Sorry, I can’t help pointing out how deeply String has infiltrated your psyche–
“…things that crawl out of his braid onto paper”

    Out of his braid? ;)

Oh, er… I don’t know about my psyche, but certainly it has infiltrated my fingers!

Welcome!

I’ve been doing stuff with string for quite some time, and describing it to others online since 1996 or so at Phiala’s String Page.

I also do some science and write some fiction.

I’m Phiala most places on the internet.
