First we had Houseday, and now it’s Blogday! (Why yes, it is all about me, thank you for noticing!) One year ago today was the first post on String Notes (although of course the whole stringpage site has been around for a while).

Like many beginning bloggers, I wasn’t sure if I would stick with it, or for how long, but a year and 145 posts later, I’m quite enjoying myself. I think the neatest thing about blogging and the blogging community is that you get to see that a) people do cool things, and b) the cool things are done by real people. Voila, you can do cool things too! This has been somewhat of a revelation, though I realize that it is rather an obvious revelation, and has led down all kinds of strange paths, including starting an online string business and getting much more involved in the non-SCA fiber arts community. I have big plans for the future too! I had big plans when I started the blog a year ago too, and many of those mutated beyond all recognition or just haven’t happened. I think it’s vital to have more plans than time, though. Right? Otherwise I wouldn’t have things all lined up for when I want to work on X, or Y, or Z. As Linus Pauling said, “The way to get good ideas is to have lots of ideas and throw the bad ones away.” The trick is to know which ones are bad! The ones that don’t get completed (or started) may be bad, or it just may not be time for them yet (thus the importance of keeping notes and recording inspirations, and indirectly back to blogging as a record of ideas, actions and progress).

I’m in Maryland right now, for work and am due somewhere else in a few minutes. I wanted to make absolutely certain that I got something posted today! Hopefully later there will be some pictures from this weekend – the first dyestudio adventure of spring!

Welcome!

I’ve been doing stuff with string for quite some time, and describing it to others online since 1996 or so at Phiala’s String Page.

I also do some science and write some fiction.

I’m Phiala most places on the internet.
