These came across one of the kumihimo email lists. I think they make a lovely contrast in old and new technologies, and spur many thoughts on the means of production, the substitutability of skill and technology, and the importance of skill and craftsmanship that I’m just too busy to share with you right now.

The traditional version.

(Please note that the creator of the braiding machine is an experienced kumihimo braider and teacher.)

Welcome!

I’ve been doing stuff with string for quite some time, and describing it to others online since 1996 or so at Phiala’s String Page.

I also do some science and write some fiction.

I’m Phiala most places on the internet.
